The Return of the "Classy" Class IV
He came back!!!! And yes it is close to a miracle. He told me last week at his appointment his phone may be getting shut off because he hasn't paid the bill so I might not be able to get a hold of him to confirm his appointment. I tried to call him this last Friday and lo and behold.. The phone had been shut off. So all weekend I was worried he wasn't going to come in and trying to figure out another way to find a Class III by Wednesday. Luckily I had a little faith he would come in because he did and he was right on time. I could have cried I was so happy. And another wonderful thing about today was I talked to Demmings right before clinic because I wanted to see if there was any way my Class IV with 3 quads could be counted as a Class III with 4 quads- I was skeptical she would do it but she did and she was so nice about it! As lame as it sounds that was a tender mercy. So all that started the day off just great. I had 2 quads to scale and boy were they tough. Tenacious calculus combined with tobacco stains makes my job hard. It was a really good experience though and Demmings was great. She spent a lot of one on one time with me giving me tips and suggestions to improve my instrumentation techniques. I was reminded today that I definitely haven't mastered all this yet so it's a good thing I'm coming back next year. I have learned a lot though and made a ton of improvement. AND... I'm still smiling because I finished my Class IV, school is almost over, and I'm done with clinic for today. The combination makes for one happy girl :)

Seal Away
Well today Chelsey so kindly gave me her patient that I gave her so I could do sealants on her. I have been struggling with sealants this semester (as in getting patients that need them) so now that it comes to the end I've got to get them all done! This patient needed 11 sealants so I definitely got a lot of practice. I still feel a little awkward when I do them and I can see the benefits of having an assistant but nontheless I can do them. It's quite the task to keep the mandibular teeth dry but I managed. I'll keep sealing away until I'm done and I am still smiling :)
My "Classy" Class IV
Well well well, the day finally came I got my Class III and he actually came in! And lo and behold he was a Class IV! I knew that this patient probably wasn't going to be the classiest of my patients considering I was told he lives in a trailer park and hitch hikes to all of his appointments. But luckily he got a girlfriend to drive him around so there was no hitchhiking to this appointment. This patient had severe bone loss, furcations, mobility, calculus, and plenty of missing teeth- and that is what may cause a problem. He only has 6 teeth on the top so there is no way that is two quads but I'm hoping since he is a Class IV my instructor will be a little more giving with him. For his first appointment he was great- we took some PAs and got a quad scaled. He didn't want anesthetic so that made it hard as the operator because I knew he was uncomfortable. I used Oraquix for the first time though and that was neat and fun to use. It was really gratifying to see the quad I had done compared to the ones I haven't- it looked good! I still missed more spots than I would have liked though and I think I'm getting a little discouraged because I spent a lot of time on that one quad. But hopefully it comes with more time and practice. My "classy" patient is going to come back this coming Monday, well I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he will. I'm paying for his cleaning so he better! He did tell me that his phone may be shut off by that time because he hasn't paid the bill so I'm just praying he remembers and shows up! It was a good experience for me to work on a harder patient and I look forward to the day I can do it with ease. Well until next time we'll keep it classy and we won't stop smiling :)

Back to Reality
Yes here I am back in clinic from a wonderful vacation. Spring Break was great but it got me a little too excited to be done with school for a bit.. Only 4 more weeks I can do it! Speaking of.. Only 4 weeks! I'm stressing and keeping my fingers crossed that I get a class III REAL soon! I just keep telling myself it will work out and I know it will some way or another.
Well today I saw my dad and my little brother. I did a full mouth on my dad with Schick.. And yes it was awful. Mostly on the maxillary anteriors. The new sensor would not get the apex of the teeth no matter how I adjusted it, kind of frustrating. But I was so grateful my dad was my patient. He was extremely patient and easy to work with. I got them done.. I can finally check off some PAs! And I managed to get out of it without having to take any retakes. Oh and I also passed off my blood glucose PE on my dad :)
After I finished my dad I saw my little brother. He was a great patient! Very cooperative and easy to work with. He even let me take two BWX!!! Today was nice because I feel like I made some progress something I need to work on is to be more calm. I was pretty nervous today so it didn't run as smoothly as it should. But afterall it is good to be back and I'm glad it's only for 4 weeks. Until next time.. I'll be smiling :)

A Bad Day
Well I definitely had a bad clinic day this last week.. Luckily my mom was my patient and was very patient with me (a patient patient, haha!). I think my problem was that I felt really rushed. I was trying to shove to many things into one clinic session (two PEs, a pano, and scaling 4 quads). Hopefully one day I'll be quick enough to do it all but I'm definitely not there yet. I ended up doing only 1 PE and scaling 4 quads- I missed a whole bunch of spots though, I think that was the most discouraging part. I was definitely holding back tears but it's over with and hopefully I have learned my lesson and it will only go up from here. And.. I leave for my cruise on Saturday so I can't wait for that! I'll definitely be smiling all week (starting after I finish my test tomorrow). Until next time....

Thank Goodness for Good Classmates
Lucky lucky me.. My patient decided to cancel last night therefore I began to panic. I called and texted a bunch of people that told me they would be willing to come in.. BUT of course none of them could come in today. I had to do some Facebook therapy and lo and behold Olivia posted something about having a patient if someone needed one. I hurried and called her and she got him all scheduled for me. I couldn't thank her enough. She had already performed the OD on this patient so I just had to scale 4 quads. He was a 1B so it wasn't too bad, I still need to work on my adaptation though. I passed off TWO PEs today!!!! Air Powder Polish and Diagnodent.. It is so nice to get those over with! Today was pretty good.. I found I need to get better with being familiar with teeth numbers and making sure I don't miss any calculus on the anterior teeth. I feel like I'm making improvement each clinic session so that's good! We only have 9 left.. I can't believe it! But I'm still smiling- whether it's because I have no idea how I'm going to get all my requirements fulfilled (especially my Class III) or because I'm happy I'm going on a cruise in a week, I'm going to leave up to your imagination :)

A GLORIous Clinic Day
Well today was a great clinic day, or should I say GLORIous! My grandma came in and boy am I lucky to have so many family members that support me and want to help me out. She was great. Very positive, easy to work with, and just as sweet as always. She is a Class V and really didn't have that much calculus but she did have a lot of soft deposit. That is something I need to work on is being sure to completely remove ALL of the soft deposit. Instructor Vining gave me a good piece of advice and told me to run over each tooth using an exploratory stroke after I floss to make sure I've gotten it all. I used my ultrasonic scaler today. I was pretty nervous because I needed to pass off my PE too. I have used it before but not with an instructor nearby nor did I feel very confident with it. But after a few pieces of suggestion from Instructor Vinging I feel extremely confident with the ultrasonic scaler and I LOVE it! One more thing about today (I know I'm kind of rambling), I realized I really need to start working on my posture not only because all of the instructors have told me I need to but my back kills me after each clinic session. So today I focused on sitting upright, I even got complimented by one of the instructors and it was great! They weren't lying when they said bad ergonomics could end your career. I also think my new glasses are helping a lot because I can see a ton better.. Imagine that! Well as I said today was a good clinic today and gave me a boost of confidence I needed. I'm definitely walking out of here with a smile on my face :)
